Poppy Room (18 – 30 Months)

A fun and purpose built room for ‘Toddlers’

The Poppy Room is a place where two-to-two and a half-year-olds blossom socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. Our child-to-staff ratio is 1:4, allowing for individualized attention.

A child’s stage of development guides the timing of moves between rooms, not simply age. We have collaborative discussions with families to decide when the Poppy Room is appropriate for each toddler. This ensures they transition at an optimal time to continue thriving.

Our team nurtures independence in the Poppy Room while providing affection and guidance. We stimulate children through a balance of structured activities and free play. Learning centres, dramatic play areas, sensory exploration, outdoor time, and more allow toddlers to absorb new concepts, improve motor skills, and form relationships.

As curious Poppy Room children interact with their environment and peers, we focus on fostering the self-confidence needed for the next stage. It is a joy to guide these little explorers as they take steps towards independence and expand their abilities. We aim for the Poppy Room to feel like a second home.

The Poppy Room at Tender Years nurtures increasing independence in two-to-three-year-olds while individualizing care and education. They also serve themselves at mealtimes, developing confidence and skills.

We work closely with families when a child shows readiness for potty training. Our nearby bathroom facilities allow us to support each child’s needs during this milestone.

Our thoughtfully designed room features:

  • A mark making centre to practice early writing
  • A creative space for arts and crafts
  • Building and construction areas
  • Imaginative small world play
  • A cozy book corner
  • Role play spaces like a kitchen
  • Sensory and messy play activities

While some structured activities are introduced, flexible free play remains essential for curiosity and choice at this age. Children are free to explore areas matching their interests. Outdoor time allows them to burn energy and develop physical abilities. Our outdoor space includes water play, a greenhouse, sandpit, slides, bikes, cars and more.

Each child is assigned a key worker who builds relationships with the child and family to provide individualised learning and reassurance. Activities are based on observations of each child’s development and needs. Our goal is to balance education and independence, ensuring these blossoming toddlers gain skills and confidence.
